Exploring a Long Forgotten Planetarium

Lafayette Natural Science Museum and Planetarium

A little known Lafayette Hot Spot for urban explorers.
The abandoned Lafayette Natural Science Museum and Planetarium, located behind the Heymann Performing Arts Center on south college road is a must see day trip. According to the advertiser, the space was opened in 1969 as an environmental museum but shut it’s doors in 2001 due to disrepair and rising facility costs. As of now the city has no idea what to do with the building or the property. To make matters more difficult the Heymann family donated the property to the city on the grounds that it either function as a planetarium or museum.

I’m wondering if our readers have any suggestions for the future of this building? Personally, I’d like to see it function as a “Butterfly House”. But that’s just me.

  1. Very informative. The beauty in the photography tells a historical story in its own. Great eye, great outlook, and great read.
